New: Top FBI official admits the bureau botched a detailed report on Russian hacking (http://bit.ly/2M0MIkc ). "I did a very bad job...letting that go out that way," Cyber Division head Scott Smith told me. Part 2 of our interview at FBI HQ now online: https://subscriber.politicopro.com/cybersecurity/article/2018/06/politico-pro-q-a-part-2-scott-smith-assistant-director-of-the-fbis-cyber-division-592610 …

Note: This does NOT change the finding that Russian interfered in the election. Cyber experts like @RobertMLee http://www.robertmlee.org/critiques-of-the-dhsfbis-grizzly-steppe-report/ … panned the DHS/FBI report for how it was written and for including irrelevant technical data, but NOT for the Russia attribution.

I read Smith a quote from Lee's cogent critique of the report, and he acknowledged that it was fair. He said Lee's comment about "trying to cover too much while saying too little" was spot-on. "I think we could have done a better job," Smith said of the report.

Smith took over the Cyber Division in 10/16, two months before the report was published (timed to Obama's response actions). I suspect the report was mostly done by the time he arrived. But he signed off on it, and now, for the first time, he's admitting that that was a mistake.

Smith argued that "more recently, we have done a better job" with these joint analysis reports. "We’ve improved our processes both internally and collaboratively with...DHS. And I think we’re getting more meat on the bone when we’re putting things out that people can [act on]."

I haven't seen critiques of more recent reports (e.g. https://www.us-cert.gov/ncas/alerts/TA18-074A … https://www.us-cert.gov/ncas/alerts/TA18-086A … https://www.us-cert.gov/ncas/alerts/TA17-318B … https://www.us-cert.gov/ncas/alerts/TA18-106A …) along the lines of what Lee and others said about the December 2016 document.

You can read more of Smith's comments about the report in part 2 of our Q&A, posted this morning on @POLITICOPro: https://subscriber.politicopro.com/cybersecurity/article/2018/06/politico-pro-q-a-part-2-scott-smith-assistant-director-of-the-fbis-cyber-division-592610 …

We also discussed the argument that 2018 is the cyber equivalent of the late 1990s, when the USS Cole and embassy bombings presaged the devastating attack to come. Smith: "The severity and frequency of cyberattacks has increased. And there’s a parity between that and the ’90s."

"We’re in a better place than we were before the terrorism attacks [of] 9/11 in the cyber arena," said Smith, who was in the bureau at the time. "But I don’t know that we’ve gone far enough yet."

Have you followed the @MalwareTechBlog case? I'd love to know what he thinks about the agents there who...don't inspire confidence. And that's well before Marcia Hofmann gets them on the stand in any eventual trial.

Have not been following the case closely, and he wasn't going to discuss specific cases, for obvious reasons.

NAL. But there are a bunch of legal problems with the charges as charged and the agents discredited themselves on the stand at a hearing last month.
