Here's a trick played by leaking that Dowd-Sekulow letter. It lets the right wing conspiracy scribes pretend the issue is ONLY obstruction for firing Comey. More recent Sekulow questions make clear Trump is being asked (and refusing to answer) abt "collusion."https://twitter.com/PoliticalShort/status/1003088762811772928 …

Unthinkable that a President acting (1) under his Constitutional authority; (2) on the written recommendation/overt participation of Deputy AG; & (3) consistent w/advice of his AG, to fire a subordinate could then be accused of obstruction for doing so. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/06/02/us/politics/trump-legal-documents.html …

And, of course, the Comey firing isn’t the only obstruction issue.

No. But to the extent Trump critics are focused on the content of the Jan 29 letter and not the March 5 questions, they're letting Trump pretend this is just about obstruction. It's not. There's a reason they haven't (yet) leaked the later letters.

What's your theory as to the difference between 1/29 and 3/5? I find it hard to imagine that as of 1/29 Mueller had no interest in talking to Trump about collusion.

Did you read this? I think Mueller is probably withholding "collusion" evidence for about 2 months after he gets it (judging by the pardon floated to Flynn, which would have come in December). March 5 may reflect early Gates testimony. https://www.emptywheel.net/2018/06/02/what-got-added-to-sekulows-list-further-obstruction-including-considering-of-firing-mueller-and-collusion/ …

Interesting. Despite the phrasing of the Trump team letter, I doubt that in January Mueller told them this was the sum total of what he would ever seek to ask Trump about.

Agree. But then they've been working hard to pretend that Trump is only being investigated for obstruction all along. Mueller just may not have been willing to share those Qs yet, bc he hadn't yet lined up the cooperating witnesses.

My read that Mueller wants to know whether the July 8 comment reflects consultation with Putin would put it solidly in the realm of conspiracy (and explain why he's really interested in comments to the press).
