Thought experiment: If Trump didn't have the Russian investigation to stage his victimhood on, what would he have used?

Also note, had Trump been demonizing BLM and immigrants (especially Muslims) 24/7 like he planned, the right wing terrorism that has flourished would likely be harder to call out.

I'm among those who believes 1) the Russian tampering was real--worse than people imagine but also 2) the response has at times done its own damage. But now that I'm thinking of the "victimhood opportunity cost" (™), and the focus on Russia probably has prevented other damage.

Meanwhile, RU policy is about the only area where the GOP has imposed constraints on Trump's fucking idiotic foreign policy.

Agreed. Unlike Russia, there wouldn’t be an investigation to focus on. There would be one awful policy or tirade or rally rant after another. That would be much more direct harm to individual people.
-
Undoubtedly more harm to individuals, even accounting for how much harm his immigration-related policies have done.
-
If he’s already emboldened the individuals, groups, and even candidates he has, imagine if he tweeted as much about immigration or Muslims or BLM as he does about Russia. Or what sort of leaked horrors beyond “shithole countries” would be out there. He’s bad enough as it is.

GOP would've been less fractured against him, blindly following on the worst policies w/o question.
-
GOP is remarkably unified, at least thus far.

Tribalism at its finest.

Agreed (even more) racial resentment-stoking would be damaging, but it could also be clarifying and potentially generative of positive change if the counter-Trump wagons were circled around BLM instead of federal prosecutors

Interesting question. Emphasis on victimization by the "deep state" seems inevitable, given his thorough corruption, whether it is RU or something else, and hostility to institutional restraint.

I didn’t think about it in those terms before but that’s a good point. Most articles also directly say Russia occupies his brain and distracts him from “governing” (such that he is)
