Q: Why do they call ordinary old FBI Agents -- the ones you see on TV -- "Special"?

Let me be clear: I'm well aware the formal title is "Special Agent." I just used it in a post, which is why I started thinking of this. My underlying question is, what does it say to Agents that they are default called "Special"?

I feel like Dale Cooper's self-esteem could recover from this demotion, but Fox Mulder's would not. And of course Scully wouldn't care.

Mainly to catch FBI impersonators. Agents will frequently gather groups of suspects, yell “high fives for my special agents”, then arrest anyone who slaps their hand. (Also, in all honesty, bc Special Agent sounds better on screen)

That’s not even remotely what the “special” in Special Agent means, but you do you
