It's not the main thing, but worth pointing out that if the WH was minimally competent, Trump would've known Sessions was going to have to recuse. It wasn't a discretionary act - the rules are literally written to cover investigations into campaigns.

Perhaps, but the investigation was public knowledge even before the election to anyone paying attention. Even that terrible NYT piece made it clear there was one.

Now I'm wondering a lot more about what got said by Sessions before and after hiring. And also before he lied in his confirmation hearing.

It’s not about competence. Trump isn’t saying, “I wish I’d known about the basis for recusal,” he’s saying, “I wish I’d known that Sessions would [have the minimal integrity required to] actually recuse.”
