If the uneasy answer in the face of institutional initiatives (however piecemeal or full of empty promises) to try and attract and retain more BIPOC students is, "well, because if I do they might not fund me/give a spot in favour of BIPOC folks" then you've told on yourself.

I mean the amount of white folks who are working on projects about Black folks that are funded for Banting Postdocs (for instance) vs the number of Black folks who are funded for any Banting postdoc, even if they're not researching Blackness specifically....is telling.

The preponderance of white graduate students in programs working on BIPOC topics vs BIPOC students working on those same topics or any other is because of who is more readily encouraged to apply for grad school + funding, given letters of recommendation, etc.

It's the same with panels, etc. If the prepared remarks for something "I shouldn't be here taking up the space" then maybe consider not taking up the space. And if it's hard to find folks to pass the mic to, then....well. Consider why.

The academic impulse that says that learning about something must be tied with an institutional process of gaining mastery/expertise in that thing (and thus being the go-to person about that thing) is a particularly dangerous one.

Which like, I get. Grad school in particular provides precious time and space for that kind of knowledge acquisition. But I think we (myself included) have to ask: am I doing this to help others work towards liberation? If so, is me benefiting from expertise/mastery the best way?

Doing the reading/listening so that you can understand and contribute to liberation can be an extra-curricular project. I get it. Time, etc. But if folks aren't willing to do any reading unless it's part of a process where they're hoping to get an academic job or whatever? Welp.
