Mike is a fourth-generation farmer and a PhD psychologist who runs a behavioral health service for farmers. He could barely find time to talk to me in the last three weeks, as flooding has ravaged the Midwest.https://newrepublic.com/article/153604/work-suicidal-farmers-its-becoming-much-bear …

This story is made up entirely of quotes from several phone calls Mike and I had over the last few weeks, spanning about 3 hours of interview time. All I did was pick and choose his words, and re-arrange them in story format.https://newrepublic.com/article/153604/work-suicidal-farmers-its-becoming-much-bear …

Obviously a lot of Mike's story had to be left on the cutting room floor. But hopefully it still does his work justice, because it's really important, and I hope ya'll can take a moment this Earth Day to read about it and share.https://newrepublic.com/article/153604/work-suicidal-farmers-its-becoming-much-bear …

Our neighboring farms are all disappearing. Children cannot maintain them and leave for jobs near metro areas. It is a thankless job, and yet wealthy farmers like Chuck Grassley get huge agricultural subsidies to keep his tax benefits. Sad.
