A downside of remote work is that we can't casually learn from each other they way we could in an office. The effects of such interactions are huge: Lunch meetings between two salespeople where they discussed sales approaches boosted revenues for both by 24% for months after!pic.twitter.com/lPVUaB1YeH

Even if you can have the lunch meetings remotely (certainly technically possible, if "meh"), it isn't clear they build relationships. In the experiment, the lunch meeting intervention seemed to create ongoing bonds. What about an informal Zoom meeting?

working with some clients on this; findings: - informal zooms ok when relationships are good - too easy to give way to distractions otherwise - semi-structured rituals seem better, with designs to encourage open dialogue

Do we have any sense of the cultural elements and limits, like are french gain incredible productivity from lunch since they take 2.5 hr lunches? What are the limits? What could be the effects of lunch+siesta in spain? This topic seems super interesting @AlexWeinberg_

Two salespeople who work remotely can still get together for lunch, though (and probably should).

Not the same. Body language and in-person subtly matters.

But who is suggesting no-one meets anyone else ever? Too many cannot think beyond a binary office/no office.

Exactly, so have a lunch meeting, grab coffee, hell do it 2-3x/week w the hours you will save w/o a commute. People forget WFH will evolve for the better once this type of stuff is back in the mix post-vaccine.

Spontaneous idea sharing is much harder in a remote setting. On the flip side, the efficiency of the sales process in many businesses has been greatly enhanced by the accelerated adoption of remote tools. Much less need to travel. Will show up in numbers.
