Wow! Noise is a secret killer of performance. A 10db noise increase (from a dishwasher to a vacuum) drops productivity by 5% - but most people don't notice since it impacts cognition, not effort. Also, note that noise is greater in poorer neighborhoods... https://joshuatdean.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/NoiseCognitiveFunctionandWorkerProductivity.pdf …pic.twitter.com/ROejxzbJcP

Listening to music while you work is also likely also negative for creative or memory tasks according to this paper, though earlier studies sometimes produced mixed results. 👇https://twitter.com/emollick/status/1123435133590233088?s=21 …

Background music makes you worse at creative tasks involving memory or verbal aspects, according to this new study. It didn’t matter whether the music was instrumental, in a foreign language, or a particular genre. Silence or low-level noise was best. https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/acp.3532 … pic.twitter.com/gFn7wmbHKT

Since a lot of the comments are mentioning that noise is a problem in open offices, here is a thread of scientific evidence showing that noise is actually the LEAST of their problems (though it is certainly one of them). https://twitter.com/emollick/status/1146417523434381313?s=21 …https://twitter.com/emollick/status/1146417523434381313 …

The evidence is overwhelming: open plan offices are absolutely terrible. For everyone. They make employees stressed, decrease team communication, and lower productivity. While there has been a lot of anecdotal evidence on this, recent studies have shown the real impact... 1/5 pic.twitter.com/UaoeO5MZ4S
