If you want to teach/learn crowdfunding, I am sharing a set of 30-odd PowerPoint slides I frequently use in classes. They are annotated with notes for teaching, and are backed by lots of data. Creative Commons license. If you have comments, let me know!

  2. When 📧=😱 This study finds a link between organizational expectations for checking email outside of work and negative health effects, relationship problems, & anxiety. Guidelines that workers not monitor email isn’t enough, the expectation comes from bosses and peers.

  3. Useful Internet Q&A sites are powered by job hunters seeking clout. This paper shows that Stack Overflow contributions for individuals peak as they are looking for jobs, and drop rapidly after a new job is found. This is especially true of more public, and obvious, contributions.

  4. To be clear: tough and firm doesn’t mean acting like a jerk. People using this approach were still polite, but removed a lot of uncertain language and were more direct. ✅ “I’m offering to pay....” ❌ “Would you accept...” ✅ “I’m willing to...” ❌”I’d be happy to...”

  5. Fascinating study of decisions made by startups by & O’Mahoney reveals that pivoting is much less dramatic than imagined. Startups usually don’t make radical & bold changes in response to problems, but rather make small adjustments to strategy that tend to accumulate.

Here are the examples of tough versus warm messages used with Craigslist sellers. Tough buyers were more likely to be rejected by sellers, but warm buyers were more likely to be ignored. Tough buyers get 15%-20% better deals than friendly ones. 2/2

Cool study on negotiations including experiments with real Craigslist sellers found: ✅Using tough & firm wording in negotiations gets better results than being warm & friendly ✅Being tough does not make the other party think worse of you ✅Writing tough messages is easier 1/2

Being the intense founder on your startup team may not be good. The level of intensity that founders feel matters less than having all founders with the same level of intensity. Ideally they should be passionate about different things (inventing, building)

One neat caveat on generalists versus specialists This paper looks at the careers of Soviet physicists In slow-moving environments, generalist scientists win because they have time to integrate knowledge, but when things move fast, you want specialist.

It's also weird that nobody knows where the Haas avocado came from. 🥑 A mailman bought some seeds off a guy who liked to collect them (including searching dumpsters for them) in the 1920s. The result was like no other avocado on Earth & is only spread through cloned grafts.

The oddest food discovery story is sweet corn: 🌽 It isn’t natural, but a mutant created during atomic bomb tests where corn was exposed to radiation. Prof. John Laughnan discovered it by idly popping mutant corn into his mouth while sorting it.

An elegant little lesson in design & usability: How could we make chess pieces explain what they do, rather than requiring beginners to remember the ruleset? This design by has pieces that show you how they move, and how important they are by size.

New of on ! RT if you like scientifically composed but soulless content! (This paper analyzed what makes promotional tweets more likely to be retweeted. I followed the suggestions in the findings for the above 😬)

But it also applies at work. People forget things that make them feel bad: 99% of people remember positive feedback a month later, but only 35% who got negative feedback remembered it (though 80% those who were paid $50 to remember, did). Consider using the power of the positive!

We may be underestimating the value of positive feedback in getting people to change behavior. It works in elementary school where this paper shows the higher the ratio of teacher praise to criticism, the more on task students are, with no real limit. 1/2

What are some solutions? As my research with Valentina Assenova shows 👇, it does appear that getting more female investors helps jumpstart the virtuous cycle where female founders get more investment and become investors, mentors, and role models. 6/6

But despite this, there are many biases against funding women. And so few female VCs that scholars studying the upside of investing in more female-led startups have had to study what happens when male VCs have daughters in order to get a big sample. 5/6

It isn't just female founders that can make a difference. Having women on a startup team can increase innovative performance. 4/6

And, as this cool study shows, women also come up with inventions that target different groups than those targeted by men, creating opportunities that are differentiated from those currently on the market - another good reason to invest! 3/6

This is despite evidence that female founders seem to be at least as successful as male founders. For example, this study found female founders make more revenue than male founders. Other studies show no difference between female and male founders... 2/6
