With this sort of take (and I've seen many takes like this in the past day about BOTW2 and Animal Crossing alone) gamers are claiming they against "pandering" But let's make it clear: Gamers fucking LOVE PANDERING but only to who they perceive as gamers: straight cis white men.

Further more it's ridiculous to argue that the decision to have a woman or POC in a game is political but having games full of guns/war/ violence is somehow not? You all know this so I'm just a broken record but we need to keep countering this illogical and oppressive rhetoric

Well, that really made the rounds! If you are into these sort of things and you want to read more about them you can read my PhD dissertation for free here: https://uwspace.uwaterloo.ca/handle/10012/13649 … and you can buy my book Feminism in Play here:https://www.amazon.com/Feminism-Play-Palgrave-Games-Context/dp/3319905384 …

Okay, I'm going to say this once: saying "not all gamers" just like saying "not all men" does not help. I am a gamer, all my friends are gamers, OF COURSE not all gamers are like this. But we need to be able to SAY "gamers" as a way to discuss this culture we are all a part of.

I'm getting the fuck off twitter because this is wild and I can't keep up with the blocking. Here are some closing thoughts based on how many ppl responded to this tweet:https://twitter.com/emmahvossen/status/1138920820187828224 …

Don't forget Two types of gamers: Real and "political agents pretending to play games in order to destroy the hobby or otherwise screw over real gamers".
-
Yes those ppl exist but I've also seen this rhetoric in every games class I've taught from ppl who do really play and love games. It would be nice if it was coming exclusivly from outsiders and not from some of my smartest students who can't see around this massive blind spot.
-
In the past I've described students in this position as hapless carriers of ignorence they dont really understand what they are saying or believe this rhetoric deep down but they've heard it 10,000 times on YouTube from fellow "gamers" so they are convinced it must be true.
-
There is too much information available for ignorance to be "pure" and ignorance can only be willful for so long until it becomes malicious. Education is important, but at this point it has to take a backseat to harm prevention.

The most frustrating version (for me) of this "white (etc.) male is default" is the argument that "well I'm fine with a gay character but there has to be a story-based reason for it otherwise just make him straight." As if anything but straight white dude needs justification.
-
yeah, exactly we often refer to this as "the gay button" ppl being okay with queer content in games as long as you can opt in and opt out of it (like in say Mass Effect) which is you know not real lol and then freaking out when they accidentally encounter queer content.
-
Bold of you to assume they didn't flip out at the optional gay options in Mass Effect.

Know a guy personally who was doing this shit. Tried to get him to explain how this stuff doesn't pander to HIM, and he did some mental aikido to deflect from admitting he sees straight white cis men as the default. It was some very "no, it's the children who are wrong" energy.
-
Yeah I've tried to have this conversation and usually what I get to in the end is "well they SHOULD pander to ppl like me because we (white male etc gamers) are the ones BUYING the games and spending the money! Anyone else buying this shit like you is an exception to the rule!"
-
Which exposes how zero-sum they've been trained to see it as. They see additions for other people as losses for them. By their own logic, companies should cater to *everyone*, including them. They feel excluded only because they've bought into the idea that is impossible
