Lol, this ending is so perfectly childish.

Everyone’s talking about Succession and I get it, but that Lightning Crashes scene at the end of this weeks Yellowjackets was one of the most intense TV watching experiences of my life.

This show continues to be brilliant on a million levels but one small thing that still endears is the way in which every person refers to three very grown adults as “the kids.”

Latest newsletter is with my good friend, Zee Clarke, who also went through a major career transition and just released her first (amazing) book, Black People Breathe. We discuss tech bros, burnout, and stepping away from it all, among other things!

Absolutely love and agree w this take. I also felt pressure to use SVB when trying to raise VC money but had no idea why other than to appear “cool” and “in-the-know.” It’s bizarre how an industry lauded for “innovation” is so spectacularly single-minded! The examples are endless

To be clear, I don’t *just* blame the feckless VCs who told their portfolio companies to pull their deposits en masse, but since they’re completely unapologetic about it, here’s my latest: nytimes.com/2023/03/16/opi

I’m glad Jamie finally has an Oscar but Stephanie should have won that category. Also Ke Huy Quan ( Data from Goonies, my fav character ever) forever and ever.

So sad to hear this! The first writing class I ever took was with years ago, intro'ing me to a community of writers that was literally life-changing, and published some of my favorite essays with their amazing editors. Will be missed!

My latest newsletter in which, as the kids say (or do they even say this anymore?), I'm back on my bullshit... exploring the trade-offs of whether or not to try having children and why—even, and especially, at 40—I can't stop thinking about the question. open.substack.com/pub/emjsmith/p

How did I not realize I got a positive Kirkus review?? Apparently my short story was published in an anthology! "...some brilliant, haunting stories—a minithriller about a smart-home assistant with a mind of its own ("Warning Signs" by Emily J. Smith)"

There is a certain type of person who will not believe anyone's lived experience until he, himself, has that exact lived experience, and Musk is the epitome of that type of person.

This is the only thing I published in 2022, but I'm proud of it! About adjusting to a relationship after spending most of my adult life single. (Wish they'd kept the original title, Stuck In A Single Identity, tho)

Writing a novel you actually like is so hard, but if you try hard enough, you can do it. Writing a novel you actually like and that "the industry" thinks will sell feels utterly impossible.

As someone who was single and childless for most of her 40s and early 50s, and then had the luck (yes, it's mostly luck) to meet a new life partner, I can relate to a lot of this article. #matrimania #singlism #childless

Love and deeply resonate with this essay from in : "What's happening now is a restlessness, a searching, a wholesale reexamination of the role that work should play in a woman’s life and identity."

i'm irrationally obsessed with making my paragraphs square, and it's wild how nearly every paragraph can be cut if you try hard enough and it's usually better bc of it.

I've been so touched by the reactions to this essay. There are so many women—no matter their relationship status—who deeply identify with being on their own.
