& at the end we did an exercise where they collected feedback notes from participants & then had us draw them out of a box to read someone else's comments aloud. Mine was "where are all the public librarians?" And he picked it out of the box & read it with mocking incredulity. 2/

But seriously, where are they? This shit is a toxic bubble. There were great minds at this event, but it was a privileged discussion led by people with a tenuous connection to the field that seem sure they have all the answers, even with none of the lived/worked experience. 3/3

I have SO much more to say about this (not about this particular guy but a part of this community of Boston-area "library innovators) that I cannot for reasons that, by virtue of me saying I can't talk about them, should imply the degree of the shitshow. None of it's good, y'all.

Also looking back on this, idk if it was clear--I meant the Uber for libraries guy was the person who mocked/pulled my question about including public librarians out of that box

Can we hang out in person soon please?

Yes, as long as you promise not to talk about anything innovative. I'd frigging rather go back to stamping cards at this point, y'know??

So, if this is the meeting I think it was, 2 thoughts: tendency in our field to privilege research & views of 3rd party orgs not on front line; &, persistent failure to recognize that, in era of lifelong learning, public libraries are at forefront of community-centered innovation
-
Yup. This is definitely what is/was going on, on both fronts. I would say I did far more "innovative" (in terms of shiny tech) things at my last (public library) job than I do now in academia. But back then, I wouldn't have gotten this invite.
