reported this story about a Garden Grove Marine vet who volunteered to help in the Ukraine war. He lost his eye after surviving a rocket attack. The story is worth a read. 💛💙🇺🇦
There is a ton of fascinating data in this report. Most pursuit crashes -- 76% -- happened during pursuits that lasted less than 5 minutes. (!!!!) Most of the pursuits initiated were for grand theft auto.
NEW: The LAPD Police Commission has published a report on pursuits from 2018 to 2023, finding that 1,032 of 4,203 pursuit crashes either killed or injured someone. The vast majority of those -- 496 -- were "third-party victims." Read here: http://lapdpolicecom.lacity.org/042523/BPC_23-082.pdf…
I finally heard back from the LASPD about a Public Records Request I filed last December, showing that from August 13 to December 1, 16 students were arrested on LAUSD campuses during school hours -- and 13 of those kids were Hispanic. I still have several LAUSD CPRAs pending.
I am outside LAPD HQ, where the Stop LAPD Spying Coalition is accusing the LAPD of taking down several records they say were previously public. I’m looking into it.
I am in Pasadena at the offices of the lawyers representing journalist Ben Camacho, who is at the center of a lawsuit alleging the LAPD accidentally released photos of officers in a public records request and now wants those records back. Story coming.
Story about today's LAPD presence in Griffith Observatory is out. I am doing a larger investigation into the mounted unit. If you've had an experience with that team, I'd really like to hear about it. Pls DM me if you want to talk.
I’m in Griffith Park, where the LAPD is announcing more mounted patrols around the park and observatory to deter what they say is a rash of property crime. The mounted unit has around 30 officers and 35 horses.
I am in Lake Arrowhead today to check on residents and businesses as a recovery effort is still underway after a massive blizzard rocked mountain communities in February and March. There’s still lots of snow on the ground in many places.
Had the best time reporting on e-bikes. In this story, I explored questions of sustainability & safety. Thanks to @OCRegisterHonk for edits & support! & I get to see myself in print (A1!), how fun :) thx to @watcharaphotog@themindyschauer@LOrtizPhoto_OCR for the amazing
I got Narcan for $50 at my local Walgreens. Will I ever use it? IDK! But man, I feel better having it in my car if I need it. You should talk to bestie
Do you carry Narcan?

I'm doing a story @ocregister on FDA's recently approving naloxone for over-the-counter use & what that means for SoCal, from harm reduction orgs & ppl who use (& those who don't.) If u have thoughts, I want to hear them. hlykke@scng.com.
It’s such a gorgeous day in LA and I have a lovely THICC Sunday Times and a cocktail. It took a lot of night shifts and sleeping through the weekend for this. Don’t ask me about the traffic cone.
My amazing colleagues Josh and Hanna busted their butts w/ me today to get out reporting about the lawsuit against Ben Camacho, who spoke to us about the public records request that started it all. I am grateful for journalists today & every day.
Today I spoke w/ @bencamach0 for this update to our story on city’s suit against him and the stop LAPD spying coalition. With @joshpcain@emilyytayylor:

That's basically the end of the report. I'll work on adding alt text to the images (I mostly just transcribed them in the tweets that are already there) but I wanted to get this out, it's important information. Love you.
The document then briefs every single LAPD shooting from 2019 to 2022. It would be a lot of tweets to describe each one (I can if there is interest) but what's notable more than anything is that each brief includes a photo of weapons found after the fact.
Again, male officers were far more likely to be involved in the non-categorical use of force incidents. 87% of the 8,433 total officers involved were men, which is pretty similar to stats in years past.
TASERs were used in 200, or 9%, of 2,230 non-categorical use of force incidents. TASERs were activated 432 times in total, and were effective 219, or 51%, times (I don't fully understand that stat and will follow up on it).
15, or 27%, of the officers involved in shootings were out of Newton Division. From 2018 to 2022, Newton Division officers were involved in more police shootings than any other division.
This is one I found really interesting -- of the 56 officers involved with police shootings, all but one were men. Just 12 of the 242 police shootings between 2018 and 2022 involved a female officer.
35% of those 31 people shot by LAPD were having a mental health crisis, and 23% were unhoused. There were slight decreases in both kinds of calls. An average of 7 rounds were fired at each shooting. 56 officers in total were involved in these 31 shootings.
LAPD officers were involved in 53 CUOF (categorical use of force) incidents in 2022, and 2,230 non-categorial uses of force. 31 of those CUOFs resulted in an officer shooting someone.
In 2022, the LAPD recorded 30,927 violent crimes. 41% of those suspects were Black and 39% were Hispanic. 23% of victims of violent crimes were Black and 47% were Hispanic.
LAPD received 48,700 mental health calls. The SMART (Systemwide Mental Assessment Response) Team responded to 5,816 of the 22,656 calls they could have been dispatched to -- so about 1/5.
Adam Strickland was about to eat ice cream in his car at the Fallbrook Center when he heard "pops." Then he saw a man who was shot fall to the ground.
Police are still on the scene, 2 officers were applying a tourniquet to a man's leg.

: 1 person has died in a shooting at the West Hills Trader Joe's, LAPD told me. There are possibly 3-4 additional victims, but info is minimal rn. Brief incoming.
is working to confirm if an officer shot someone in Monterey Park, and I am attempting more info about a CHP officer that shot a man in Hawthorne last night. Friday news dumps are real 🥵
Hi LA 💙⚾️ it's Dodgers opening day, there is a rainbow downtown, and the rain is clearing up -- it's set to be a gorgeous day. What can I help you with? Love you.

We now know that 7 people were transported to the hospital and 1 person died as a result of this crash. Seal Beach PD would not tell me what vehicle code violation initiated the original stop -- but the suspect had an outstanding federal warrant.
This is just hours after a man who had stolen a CHP cruiser and jumped out of the moving vehicle, hitting the pavement at 40+ mph, on camera -- and later died.
#BREAKING One dead and seven injured at 2nd St & #PCH, after a pursuit comes to a crashing end in #LongBeach. Nine cars involved. Unknown if the suspect or an innocent driver was the fatality.
I believe in my heart of hearts that reporting is a public service that makes us a better world. I hope this sets a precedent for how we cover gun violence, as an industry, and how we talk about it. Assault rifles are made to pulverize you. That is the straight-up truth.
“It literally can pulverize bones … it can provide this blast effect.”
The AR-15 is the weapon of choice for many mass killers. The Post sought to illustrate the lethal force of the weapon and show in detail its catastrophic effects. https://wapo.st/3lF9moX
BREAKING: A man driving a stolen CHP car during a pursuit jumped out of the fast-moving vehicle and hit the pavement at 50 mph while cameras were rolling. CHP officers dragged the man across the pavement and are still rendering first aid. It's not clear if the man survived.
