These cuts & deep reductions elsewhere in the budget will impact the EU's ability to tackle the greatest issues facing our generation: rising extreme poverty, inequality, the climate emergency and future pandemics. When the world needed Europe to step up, it has stepped back.

For long-term development (the NDICI) the outlook is particularly troubling. We are potentially left with a budget that's smaller than in the current MFF. Even if we subtract the UK's contribution, the EU will still contribute €2.3bn less than it does today.

The cuts agreed by leaders are a false economy. They'll cost Europe more in the long-run as they miss a vital opportunity to cut the life-span of the pandemic. Over to the European Parliament...
