The more I sit with the ending of WandaVision, the less I like it. I hooked into the show as an exploration of tumbling through your brain, hitting every trauma floor on the way down, and the finale came too close to saying, “It’s OK to spread your trauma outward if you’re sad!”
I don’t THINK this show wants to excuse an abuser who removes the consent of an entire town of people, and it definitely UNDERSTANDS what she did wasn’t cool, but its rush to get to a witch vs. witch climax undercuts the severity of its protagonist’s actions.
The GRIEF stuff, comparatively, was pretty well handled. The stuff with Vision and the kids was solid throughout the finale. But the emotional tone doesn’t always understand other people exist in the world outside of the main characters.
Don’t get me wrong: A lot of trauma survivors spread their pain to other people. “Trauma creates waves,” a friend put it to me. But when you’re playing around with that theme in your protagonist, you’re handling old dynamite. You have to be SO careful. I’m not sure this show was.
Marvel’s endless get out of jail free card is “Oh, we can deal with it in the next movie.” But at a certain point, the chickens need to come home to roost in the same barn they left from.
I did like when Elizabeth Olsen wore the red leather dress or whatever that was. Very “my mom let me use her credit card at Express!!!” I wish I could pull off that look.
The finale kinda hit a raw nerve with me because I have spent the first few months of 2021 dealing with the fact that I used TV as an escape pod when my life got to be too much as a kid, so the central metaphor of this show hit home. But geez Louise.
I just wish the show hadn’t been so quick to hustle offscreen the weight of what Wanda had done. All of these people were held captive by her! People have done shitty things to me, and I can accept they’re sad, while still not excusing the shitty things they do!
It has Wanda look at others’ pain, then has her look away because we can’t consider her too monstrous. A major failing of IP-driven franchise filmmaking is its frequent timidity in confronting its protagonists as anything other than gods who make things right by doing them.
Also the final punishment for Agatha really doesn’t fit her crime. I know they’ll undo it in five or six minutes when they need the character back, but dang.
Anyway, I was gonna write a thing about how meaningful the show felt to me, and now it made me feel like a chump. Joke’s on me!
(To be clear, I am still going to write this thing. It takes a lot to keep me from writing a 4,000 word essay about television and/or myself!!)
