Cavalier queer. Garbage tweets all day long. Candid. Fumbling toward kindness, happiness, and social justice, like some kind of naïve robot learning to love.

Unreal: this thing compiles any program to nothing but a chain of `mov` instructions.https://github.com/xoreaxeaxeax/movfuscator/blob/master/README.md …

Yes, evidently the x86 (Intel) `mov` instruction is Turing-complete all on its own: http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/%7Esd601/papers/mov.pdf … (PDF)

@emilyst Yeah, I see this more as overdesign in the x86 instruction set than some sort of amazing hack.

@emilyst It’s a good hack, but if the CPU didn’t work that way, there’d be nothing.

@ieure to be clear, i don’t regard this as a theoretical breakthrough. the *instruction* is Turing-complete, not the concept of `mov`.

@ieure like if you realized you could beat Legend of Zelda entirely by holding the up arrow or something. a bug in the game.

@emilyst What’s interesting to me is that the instruction decoding part of a modern CPU is likely more powerful than a whole old CPU.

@ieure lemme know when you use this to crack AES or mine bitcoin.

@emilyst @rob_rix It seems xor is Turing complete as well.https://twitter.com/xoreaxeaxeax/status/647322333498224640 …

x86 XOR is turing complete, so here's the XORfuscator - compiles C into xors, and only xors: https://github.com/xoreaxeaxeax/movfuscator/blob/master/post/xor.py … pic.twitter.com/rAMILouCAU
