A lot of ink has been spilled over what event precipitated the Renaissance. It was probably a number of factors which had in common one thing. They demonstrated that the ancient view of the world was not perfect.

Two very especially salient examples of this come to mind. First, the "discovery" of the "New World": which demonstrated not only the existence of other lands but also shaped the concept of how the world was organized as a globe (not as roughly concentric elemental spheres).

Second, Tycho's Supernova of 1572: which demonstrated that the heavens (the night sky) were not perfectly immutable and eternal in form and inaugurated what would become modern science.

tbf i think the original christians were expecting the apocalypse in their own lifetimes

they were. you can see how the writing in the New Testament changes from the very earliest epistles until the later scripture.

I’m starting to wonder if earlier ancient civilisations believed this, or something else … but did they tend to worry about things that didn’t happen too? (I was wayyy too young to be spoon-fed this sort of thing at age 14, when all I wanted to spend more time on was coding).
