Working on this project with Dr. Marc Slutzky & the team was a fantastic experience, and the lab is currently looking for more talented post-docs to continue & expand this important work. Marc is a great scientist to work with - thank you Marc for your leadership!

The best part about this large (n=32), long ('13-'19) study was seeing & hearing about the improved quality of life for our stroke survivors. Our work was recently covered by - and it's worth watching Nykima's before & after videos.

The MyoCI game helped retrain stroke survivor's muscle activation patterns - they learned to make their muscles take turns again. We had stroke survivors come in 3 days/week for 6 weeks & we worked on 2 muscles at a time. We saw significant reduction in impairment in all groups.

Sometimes people's muscle contraction patterns change after stroke - their muscles don't properly take turns ("abnormal coactivation"). We connected wireless EMG electrodes to a computer and allowed stroke survivors to use *their own muscle activity* to control a computer game.

Happy to announce that our paper from my time at 's on using EMG biofeedback for stroke rehabilitation is finally out! Providing real-time EMG feedback - "MyoCI" - to reduce co-activation improved stroke survivor's arm function.

Thanks to my co-authors, including Matt Goldrick, who have been a pleasure to work with since early '13! This was extremely interdisciplinary work across both Northwestern campuses ().

tl;dr: Gestures win! This matters for designing an ECoG-based speech neuroprosthetic device using this part of the brain. Decode the movements of speech production, not the phonemes.

While there is some phoneme representation in this region, speech motor cortex activity is clearly more aligned with the representation of articulatory gestures during speech production.

We had participants read words with allophones - e.g. pill / bill / spill - to better sort out whether this cortical region cares about the phonemes of the word - e.g. /b/ or /p/ - or if this region cares about the movements of the speech production, or *articulatory gestures*

We recorded electrocorticography (ECoG) from speech motor & pre-motor cortex during overt speech production of single words during awake brain surgeries. Thanks to Robert D. Flint, Griffin Milsap, Weiran Wang, our NMH team, and esp. our participants for their time and effort.

Delighted that my research from '13-'17 with , , , Matthew Tate & Jessica Templer at is finally out in J. Neuroscience! We used ECoG to investigate brain activity during speech production.

UPDATE: Republicans rejected our motion to adjourn until Monday so senators could read the bill they just introduced. RT If you think senators should have time to read a bill that affects every single American.
