Asked to talk to TAs about balancing teaching & research, I talked about balancing teaching & research ... and life.

here's the pitch. we make a new reality tv show. call it let's say Reviewers in Cars. 3 reviewers set out on a cross country trek with a stack of papers. one of them is of course reviewer 2. hilarity ensues.

"It's a sprint, not a marathon": Throw something together quickly and we'll get a paper out of it. Don't worry about thinking long term, either forwards (durable results) or backwards (well-grounded in what went before).

From an internship ad circulated on some local mailing lists: "It's a sprint, not a marathon". So, IOW: we're going to work you to the bone but it's okay because it's short term?

The FATE group at MSR-NYC still has a couple summer intern openings for PhD students with an interest in responsible AI and experience with semi-structured interviews, co-design, and HCI methods generally. Interested? Email me and with your research background!

Oh, looks like I untagged somewhere upthread. Hey your customer service continues to suck! Are you gonna fix my bag or not? Are you ever going to let me know?

And they never replied with info about how to go pick up that loaner bag they said they'd have for me.

But I still haven't received any confirmation that the bag is "checked in", nor a timeline for when it will be repaired (beyond a generic 6-8 weeks --- starting at check in or what?).

They also said that the repair is under warranty (based on the photos I sent when I requested the repair, I guess). If they can make that determination based on photos, why not just say so right away? (In fact, why not do that first before I go to the expense of sending it in?)

The request of the USPS tracking info is odd, given that they'd just said they did have my bag (based on the repair number I sent). Seems like maybe they don't have it/have misplaced it? (But then how will the USPS info help?)

I'm sure this is boring, but I'm going to update this thread anyway. On 1/28 in that same message they also asked for the USPS tracking info and offered to "pull it up the queue" (presumably because I'm the squeaky wheel) and offered me a loaner bag, if I'm near a retail store.

1 The first time (years ago) I heard an engineer describe their product as “so easy even your mom can learn it,” I didn’t think much of it. In retrospect, it was my first introduction to the insidious bias that exists when it comes to age demographics. A thread >>

If you, like me, publish with and hate numbered citations with a burning passion, you should take a moment to fill out the survey that might have also landed in your inbox this morning ("ACM citation format survey"). AUTHOR NAMES IN IN-LINE CITATIONS PLEASE!

the has reignited controversy around Native mascots. proponents of team names like the & claim the terms are intended to honor, & are used respectfully. i found over 170,000 tweets showing the opposite. full results: 1/

that's why i introduced the 49ers dataset--it's a two-fold control: 1) non-Native team name 2) also in the Super Bowl, so should be similar attention/traffic differentials show just "Native" is enough to up hate speech.

I've also noticed this. Engineering responsibility for some reason is something no one seems to want to talk about in machine learning. When a model misbehaves, there's a tendency to treat it like a child gone wild rather than the expected consequence of a set of design choices.

Ultimately, I think an important part of the solution lies in education: integrating these notions of responsibility into undergrad and graduate training programs and also continuing education of those of us who have already graduated.

And so maybe bringing in as a presupposition that we bear such responsibilities feels like a surprising or extra burden. >>

I wonder if it's not because folks in aren't used to thinking in terms of the responsibilities we bear (towards other members of the research community, the people who use or are otherwise affected by the tech we build, the communities who speak the lgs we study) >>
