South Bend has seemed oddly illegible to the rest of the country. Is it a college town? A post-industrial city? A rich white place? A poor minority one? His pitch is about a place because he lacks experience anywhere outside of the place. That it’s about a place that no one knows, is problematic. That it’s about a place that most don’t have time/interest to know is why he won’t ever win until he has something more than a place.

The environment on campus is not even close to the same once you leave campus and head into South Bend neighborhoods. I’ve lived here all my life and glad I moved out of SB to a smaller area in the county that’s quiet
