I grew up in Chicago and had a vague idea of South Bend as a small-ish working-class city. So I was surprised when I asked Pete Buttigieg what far-flung voters think of it. They often assume, he said, that it's "a tidy, white, wealthy, homogeneous college town.”

It's interesting to me that people hold this view, because it's the exact opposite of what Buttigieg has been describing. What does it say about South Bend that people who've never been there have wildly varying and contradictory views of it?

Some of this is just me musing about how we form perceptions of places. But in Buttigieg's case, what you make of South Bend can shape what you make of him. More than the other candidates, his pitch is about *a place.*

This is the most accurate depiction of my city of South Bend that I have read. From the pictures to the writing to the people interviewed I can tell that some time was spent IN South Bend. Thank you!
