Looks like Facebook is starting to roll out its new preventive health tool. Important to note that health info you share on social media platforms is not covered by HIPAA, which means Facebook is not obligated by law to protect it.pic.twitter.com/4xmiIPHpZL

This new tool is asking you to share very personal health information, like whether you’ve gotten a Pap smear.pic.twitter.com/ClIcX02AtS

Facebook says it won’t share your health info with other users or third parties, including advertisers, but the data will be accessible to some Facebook employees.https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/facebook-vows-strict-privacy-safeguards-as-it-rolls-out-preventive-health-tool/ …

Facebook of course is promising strict privacy safeguards, but given the platform’s history of data breaches and privacy violations, how can users trust that their data will be protected?

If you're interested in reading a longer version of this tweet thread, I wrote about how the health information you share with Facebook isn't protected in the same way your medical records are.https://onezero.medium.com/facebook-wants-your-medical-data-but-isnt-legally-obligated-to-protect-it-4bc50d7e3bf6 …

Glad you can leave your house every day to have a social life. For disabled, sick, and elderly people, Facebook is an essential connection to the world we can't reach. Feel free to live your life as you wish, but maybe think about how the way you live doesn't work for everyone.

Why should anyone value their privacy? I see these data zealot things constantly and its always talking about what not to do in order to protect my privacy but never why I should in the first place. The tools add value to my life in exchange for my data, which doesn't cost me.
