This just sounds like life advice and when framed as advice for academia it isn’t that nice.
-
I look at it as this: academia can sometimes be a toxic and stressful place. People can get really competitive. So, we should focus on being kind to one another instead of trying to push each other down. To me, that’s really great advice.

+1. Also applies to STE(A)M industries.

Good point!

The longer I live, the less impressed I am by intelligence. It's a plus but it's not what makes someone great.

Inherent assumption is that we aren’t kind or that kindness equates with some version of civility. And we aren’t all smart. Some of us are privileged and lucky and gatekeepers.
-
I disagree. Everyone is smart at different things. Some are book smart, some are people smart, some are smart at some wild niche category. Just as a wasp is just as evolved as a human, any person can be smart, were just all smart at different things.

I tell every medical student 2 pieces of advice to succeed:
1. Be on time (5-10 minutes early)
2. Be kind
These 2 things alone will carry them further than they can imagine because so few accomplish them. (Sadly)
Everyone is smart. -
I would add ‘be humble’.
