Evolution can only jump over small fitness valleys, we can walk through deep and wide fitness chasm because we can make out the hills on the other side. Our tools should support this.

If we cannot represent these broken intermediate steps we are limited to what we can keep in our heads.

Improvement rarely happens in one step but mostly through a series of intermediate steps each of which is dysfunctional while still informing us about the shape of the artifact after the improvement process converged again on a functional result.

All creative work from simple clay brick masonry to composing a symphony relies on feedback from the unfinished work to inform further progress. Whenever a tool prevents us from representing and playing with an in-progress state we're forced to rely on mental simulation.

Another thought: static typing prevents programs which are broken in a certain way from being run but sometimes you want to run a program you know is broken to observe the parts of it you believe aren't.

The funny thing is I subconsciously was already using it like that all the while wishing for an editor which would prevent me from doing it.

A program like "console.log(foo, bar" is quite useless since it has a syntax error. I used to think editors should be structural so that such errors would be impossible, but actually it's a sort of mini TODO comment and helpful in reducing cognitive load.

In "God made men, Samuel Colt made them equal" we encounter the idea that firearms reduced the inequality in the capacity for violence. Therfore for the average joe the comparative advantage shifted towards a military occupation while for the elite it shifted away.

Shots fired (NBER-style) at the research literature on happiness. Do different people really report their happiness in the same way? Maybe not.

I guess return rate can be faked too but it's costlier than faking reviews.

The murder-for-hire charge was finally dropped today. What a relief! It really hurt to have that hanging over me all these years, to be accused of being something I’m not. I just hope I won’t be seen in that light anymore.

When you're posting a cute kitten to r/aww nobody knows that you're a nazi or a communist. The internet is an engine of ideological intermingling, just not of conscious ideological intermingling.
