I think some of this also applies to students who’re being asked by their universities (amid #COVID19 concerns) not to self-quarantine, but to take all their classes online. That too is a privilege — for those who can afford the infrastructure and internet access to keep up. 1/2https://twitter.com/JeremyFarrar/status/1234966633111859200 …

I’m by no means suggesting that this isn’t a reasonable intervention... But my systems engineering bias is showing. I’m not confident in how such an intervention will be employed without disproportionately hurting the less-advantaged. Same applies to work-from-home policies. 2/2

While I agree and I raised this concern myself, airports and schools remain foci for super-spreading and I’m worried about that too. A systemic intervention would be: have a reasonable public health and epidemiological approach. Won’t happen in the US, of course!

Again, I’m not suggesting it isn’t a reasonable intervention (I included that very statement in this thread to make this clear) — I just think we need to be honest about the effects it may have on students (and employees) who are less privileged.

It is also why Seattle Public Schools haven't closed - and one of their big sticking points is basically if they *did* close, how do you feed the nearly 20,000 students who get two meals a day from school.

We also see companies trying (again, limited) to address this - Amazon & Microsoft have asked people to telework, and have said that hourly workers will get paid full time even as need drops. This is not to argue that anything about this is reasonable or fair.

A little more context on Amazon... They're actually not paying all of their hourly workers:https://twitter.com/emahlee/status/1236394144420909056 …
