      Emily Cunningham Retweeted Divest Princeton

👀 I should know better, but I'm still shocked when leaders at our country's leading institutions still say such willfully ignorant or maliciously false things about climate. Did a fossil fuel company inhabit @Princeton president's body while he uttered those words? Or...??https://twitter.com/DivestPrinceton/status/1227241751783628800 …

      Divest Princeton @DivestPrinceton
.@Princeton Pres. Eisgruber last night: “I think it is not accurate to say that this is happening because of these big companies that are somehow doing it to us. They’re responding to a set of preferences that people have and act upon.” This is false 1/6 https://www.dailyprincetonian.com/article/2020/02/eisgruber-fields-title-ix-divestment-questions-at-cpuc-meeting …

But what about the fossil fuel companies that have spent billions to block cars /transportation/ etc from being run on clean energy? That doesn't seem like an individual choice, yes?

Imagine City-A has invested in infrastructure that allows for high-speed, efficient public transportation, walkable cities, clean energy etc. Then imagine City-B invests in fossil fuel energy, highways and other car infrastructure, etc.

Imagine that fossil fuel interests spent $$$ to keep City-B as it is. The citizens in one city are not morally superior than those in the other city. This is not about individual choices, but about the system they live in.

This doesn't mean that individuals in either city can just passively sit by. Each individual is responsible for making as many changes as they can. However, this does not negate the systemic, powerful $$$ interests they're working within.
