Climate folks are often asked what gives us hope. We tend to hate that Q. It forces us into performative optimism. But I’m in a packed house at @Columbia listening to @DrKateMarvel, @KendraWrites, @DrKWilkinson and @MaryHeglar — and damn if these women don’t make me hopeful AFpic.twitter.com/fkQIIbR2xv

I agree about the question, but I also think that's not *really* what people are asking when they ask what gives us hope. Most are asking something quite different... and important:https://twitter.com/emahlee/status/1210384302506012672 …

I've been thinking a lot about @MaryHeglar's thread. I agree with her. And... When people ask climate activists, "What gives you hope" I think they may actually be asking, "What makes it possible for you to do what you do? And can I have some of that?" But isn't the climate crisis a deeply personal issue? I find it to be. I don't know how to answer basically any climate question without it being super personal. We've figured something out about climate. I think others are asking what we figured out & how we figured it out. 1/

Everyone has different boundaries and comfort level with what questions they want to answer. That's great. I'd like to see more people engaged on climate *at scale.*I think that will happen more quickly, in part, if some of us engage with other minds about this question. 2/

I agree that expectations about what people "should" answer is gross and tiring. But I don't think it's inappropriate to ask the kinds of questions I raised above when done well and thoughtfully.

I mean because it is weird, right? It's weird that many people have much of the same information we do about the climate crisis, yet others aren't doing much if anything about it. While some of us are devoting our career or otherwise doing a lot?

Why is that? I think that's a good question that I can understand panel facilitators (or journalists) would want to prod. Absolutely understand that some may not want to answer. Just like I don't answer every question a journalist asks me.

Maybe the question doesn't have to be personal. Maybe it can simply be: what do you think makes it possible for people to meaningfully engage and act on climate? I'm sure many of the people on that panel have good and varied ideas on that question. Can we learn/scale from them?
