thanks, that is a great explanation. Basically how I feel about this. But it is circular: seeing the possibility, and knowing that using it depends on action .. that is actually what 'hope' means. Hope is an active thing: search for opportunity, believe in it, act on it.

The purpose thing goes way back to Aristotle, who said that people and human morality needs a 'telos' (end, goal). Aristotelian virtue ethics is much about finding and following your 'telos'. .. but I think you really do need your community, to belong to. We're social apes.
