I'm ALL IN for people getting together to process climate emotions. But I think it's 💯 a mistake to center this around alcohol for *many* reasons, including backing Indigenous leadership. I ask people to consider a Climate Coffee or some other fun thing instead. THREAD 1/https://twitter.com/ClimateHuman/status/1207412854095171584 …

One of the great things that happened at #AGU19 last week was this Climate Beer! One person said it was "the best part of AGU for me... Made the whole thing worth it." We forged connection and unlocked emotions to accelerate climate action... and to feel better. pic.twitter.com/9ykqrFKkNx

Emily, you make good points, though as the website says, everyone is encouraged to gather around whatever food or beverage they prefer. As someone who did avoid alcohol for many years due to these reasons, however, I will reconsider.

I love your format though. I have lead and participated in many groups where people got equal time to listen and be listened to. It's POWERFUL. We need to cry and rage and laugh and get our emotions out. It helps us to be more effective climate activists.

One thing I've also been a part of are listening projects with the public. So instead of "talking to them" about climate. We ask them questions, and listen to them. So there might be a question like, "how do you feel about the climate crisis?" or...

The idea is that many people haven't gotten a chance to really think about and feel and be listened to about the climate crisis. And if given this chance, it will open up space for them to "wake up," as you say. And hopefully take action.

So the format is: people who want to participate in this gather together, have a round of intros, break into listening pairs and trade 5 minutes each of listening time (because we are able to listen better to others when we are first listened to), make the signs,...

(or come with signs already made), go off in pairs and engage with people around the question from the sign, and LISTEN to them. After a set amount of time doing listening with people in the public (an hour?) come back, do another round of pair sharing, debrief..
