Well, it's emotionally traumatic and it immediately alienates you from the world as we know it, and outside of climate twitter there's really no social support or even acknowledgement that helps you process the trauma (rather the opposite), so....

Which is not to say that emotions are the only issue. The entire premise of my book is that the language of climate change misrepresents the crisis, making its solutions seem worse than the problem itself, even for people who acknowledge climate change is real.

Here's an interesting paper on communicating difficult climate scenarios. What's called "adaptive coping" here requires a lot of emotional and mental work and many people are just not doing it. http://bit.ly/2CZ4Qqu pic.twitter.com/AQeAl2cbip

I think Greta Thunberg managed to mainstream that way of coping and people can now emulate her solid and very natural personal pathway to taking it so seriously.

Here's a study from Norway where people do understand the problem but are "living in denial" about the repercussions. It's not direct science or mitigation denial, rather some sort of complacency or apathy.https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/living-denial …

people would rather die than feel isolated from their social group. literally. and it's not just about being shunned. we make the meaning of our lives out of our social context, out of how we represent ourselves in relation to others. 1/2

my great hope is that the narratives that have given meaning to our lives will start to ring increasingly hollow as climate change becomes all the more apparent, making space for new, more deeply resonant narratives, grounded in reality and integrity, to emerge. 2/2
