That rarest of rare things - a media article that actually recognises the links between what we do as individuals and how wider social change takes place. Thanks @BBCJustinR 👍 We can't all be Greta, but your choices have a ripple effecthttps://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-49756280 …

As someone who's led a low impact life for 20 years, I disagree. Not everyone has the privilege to make low impact choices in a world designed around mass consumption and fossil fuel use. What if you don't live near public transport / access to fresh veg?

If you can, absolutely try to make lifestyle choices and help influence others. But the main issue is govt & corporate action. To a huge extent that decides our behaviour. If we had 100% renewable energy, electric cars from recycled parts, who cares how much anyone drives?

But again, I don't see these as separate things. The very simplest thing we can do to influence govt is vote, beyond that many other options to try to influence systems. An example: main reason given for Heathrow expansion is growing demand. That 'demand' is *us*

The speech I gave was actually an example of collective action. See:https://twitter.com/emahlee/status/1175960794783043585 …

I was one of thousands of other Amazon workers. Over 8,000 of us *publicly* signed our name to an open letter asking Bezos for bold, immediate climate action. I was able to speak out because my other co-workers were there, literally, standing up with me. This is a movement. https://twitter.com/therockyfiles/status/1175958826048208896 …

That said, @bethsawin has the absolute best take on the false dichotomy of individual vs collective action. See this thread for links:https://twitter.com/emahlee/status/1162494614495830016 …

Since our culture emphasizes individual solutions, I like to emphasize collective action. That said, the best thing I've ever read on (the false dichotomy between) individual vs collective action is by @bethsawin. Well, she's written a number of things. 1/ https://twitter.com/bethsawin/status/1135633563553009664 …

I agree it's not a dichotomy. But many people, esp. on low incomes, are constrained by what individual action they can take. Emphasis on consumer action (the main ask of green movt for past 20 yrs) has made people feel guilty & angry at privileged 'elites' telling them what to do
