Who is working on #AI and #sustainability in the UK (or nearby)? There must be a lot of people but no one comes to mind. I've been asked to suggest a speaker other than me, which is a fairly low bar given how much I talk about sustainability (a bit but...)

@anne_e_currie and@coedethics have a great whitepaper on environmental impact of server choice and data centre location which has ramifications for the sustainability of AI. We're starting to think about this at@AdaLovelaceInst but a bit early on to field a speaker.2 replies 1 retweet 6 likes -

The top UK speaker on this at the moment is
@PaulDJohnston I'd say. He and I co-wrote the paper. He's ex-AWS, and the most valuable change in this area is around@awscloud power usage. Alternatively,@emahlee can probably field someone great but perhaps not in the UK?1 reply 0 retweets 3 likes -

Furiously blushing...
#AI and#sustainability is a curious mix though. Most in tech avoid thinking about sustainability as anything other than a positive force, which is difficult to get around. It depends what the person asking means by#AI as well. Intrigued1 reply 0 retweets 6 likes -

@mer__edith@garyacook. Re who has done thinking on AI and sustainability in the US,@bcmerchant has done important reporting on Big Tech selling AI to Big Oil to help them discover and accelerate oil and gas extraction (the LAST thing we need). THREAD

Same week Shipment Zero was announced,@bcmerchant reported Amazon, Goggle & MS have deals with oil companies, “collectively worth billions” to help them “churn out more oil.” https://gizmodo.com/how-google-microsoft-and-big-tech-are-automating-the-1832790799 … https://twitter.com/higginsdunn/status/1104044599222435843 …Show this thread2 replies 0 retweets 4 likes

That thread links to two of @bcmerchant's pieces on this (1st tweet and last tweet of thread). @garyacook has looked into Amazon's data center fossil fuel vs renewable energy investment. Good thread from Gary

@mer__edith is an expert on AI and ethics, but I'm not sure how much she's put attention on AI and climate specifically. Meredith? Also, do you know others we should know about?0 replies 0 retweets 2 likesThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
