Thanks for all these recommendations. I guess where I was coming from came out of a conversation with @AlexSteffen about what will be the main driver of climate action. I have much to learn and am trying to absorb as much as I can. https://twitter.com/emahlee/status/1124201616184229888 …pic.twitter.com/i8qbpjns1c

Thank you! 🙏 we all (at least I) learn so much from *vaguely gestures around* y’all, esp. also the AMZN staff initiatives & investigations—very much looking forward to seeing where this leads! Yep very curious to see where Alex is headed, he’s an uncanny good feel for US context

For an international context, I often find small states very helpful bc we seek simplicity, not messy ubercomplex analyses. Take Morocco (Desertec) & Mongolia as a fascinating case for decarbonization for example to see why Kingsmill is wrong (leading back to the initial point).

I think we'll need to jump on the phone at some point because I don't have any knowledge about Morocco and Mongolia in regards to decarbonization to be to assess wether Kingsmill is wrong or not. I'm very open to hearing different points of view so I can figure out my own :).

Excellent, thx! Quick link re Mongolia / regional power sectors incl. in Northeast Asia: https://dl.tufts.edu/concern/pdfs/0r967f935 … it’s a bit crap & dated but may help as intro / summary of resource for people researching these issues

Thanks, but what's the underlining takeaway? How do Mongolia and Morocco serve as use cases that disprove Kingsmill?

Mongolia shows the political economy vs. economics point. It has all solar/wind sources one could wish for but will remain stuck w coal & natural resources bc that’s what the elites profit from & have come to co-exploit w the biggest mining companies worldwide. Similar in China

I see this as a "capitalist eating capitalist" issue. When there are enough global capitalists exploiting solar/wind, they will eat away at the global fossil fuel capitalists. Right now, the solar/wind capitalists haven't become big enough yet to undermine the elites there.

And re China, why are they heavily investing in solar/wind if they didn't see it as strategic for their long-term interests? I think they see the writing on the wall and are trying to get on top of the new clean energy economy to become an even bigger global power.

For years I've explained again&again that wasted wind&solar (&hydro&nuclear) power isn't mainly due to grid constraints or planning or intermittency but due to grid operators being in bed with coal power firms. Can't deny the satisfaction of reading articles demonstrating this. https://twitter.com/laurimyllyvirta/status/1162550145692491776 …
