Toni Morrison said, about white ppl, "If you can only be tall because somebody is on their knees, then you have a serious problem." Which raises the question for us white people...what made us feel small in the first place?https://twitter.com/bethsawin/status/1163548128450174976 …

And once we figure that out, what are we to do about it? More and more it seems clear to me that these are questions white people need to answer for ourselves in order to fully address climate change.

James Baldwin: "White people...have quite enough to do in learning how to accept and love themselves and each other, and when they have achieved this--which will not be tomorrow and may very well be never--the Negro problem will no longer exist, for it will no longer be needed."

If you are convinced that systemic racism stands in the way of effective responses to climate change*, then white people learning how to accept and love themselves and each other presents itself as an under-discussed part of responding to climate change.

I am interested in learning from work that might have bearing on this: mental health, trauma, abusive family systems, dismantling racism schools of practice that get at white people doing self-healing work. I'm open to recommendations on things to read & think about. Thanks.

Will you be in NYC for the UN summit in September, by chance? I highly recommend going to Sustaining All Life workshops which is a project of Re-evaluation Counseling.

A list of workshops being offered. I don't see one specifically about white people doing healing work, but Sustaining All Life folks very much get this.https://www.sustainingalllife.org/nycs2019-workshops …

"Individuals can be freed from the damage caused by racism, and other oppressions, through the process of emotional discharge. This healing empowers individuals to engage in the organizing and struggle necessary for the elimination of racism from institutions and society."
