This is such horseshit. People failing to adopt to some degree the change they want to see in the world is an impediment to action. Also, if individual behavior change doesn't do any good, can't the same be said of individual political participation?

Since our culture emphasizes individual solutions, I like to emphasize collective action. That said, the best thing I've ever read on (the false dichotomy between) individual vs collective action is by @bethsawin. Well, she's written a number of things. 1/https://twitter.com/bethsawin/status/1135633563553009664 …

I mean who would say “treating your female coworkers with respect is just virtue signaling; what we really need is equal pay legislation”. We can work, learn, change, and grow as individuals and work towards systemic change both at once.

Long ago I had a doctor friend who cautioned about one of the less well studied consequences of aging: hardening of the categories.

Individual or collective action? Part 2 from @bethsawin. I *love* her discussion of fractals and simple rules. "I believe that systems shift most effectively when change is happening at multiple levels with some sort of loose congruence." 4/https://twitter.com/bethsawin/status/1100084168120242177 …

Despite a weekend break from the debate, my attention keeps getting pulled back to the threads arguing that personal action to lower one's carbon footprint is ineffective at best and counterproductive at worst toward the goal of climate protection.

Having grown up in Berkeley at the height of Mandelbrot change theory, I have an allergic reaction to these lines of argument, which I find unproductive and quite often used to make bold claims for small-step effectiveness without the need to provide any actual evidence.
