Don't get me wrong: "50% of shipments net-zero carbon by 2030" is a good goal: precise, actionable, measurable, in the right direction. It's not clear to me that it's enough.

IPCC 1.5°C summary to policymakers: global net CO2 by humans must fall by 45% by 2030, reaching "net zero" around 2050. https://www.ipcc.ch/2018/10/08/summary-for-policymakers-of-ipcc-special-report-on-global-warming-of-1-5c-approved-by-governments/ …

Is Shipment Zero on track to that goal? Maybe? I literally do not have enough information, and would need to see numbers around total net carbon impact across all shipments or averaged across shipments to answer that question.

Here are some reasons why it’s not enough: 1)pic.twitter.com/drsIfVEKZ5

2) Amazon is a massive company. Emissions from shipments are an important but not comprehensive look into total emissions. Only tackling shipment emissions leaves so. much. out.

@bradplumer explains why “US probably has to hit net zero emissions by somewhere around 2030 for the world to stay below 1.5°C of global warming” Same applies to Amazon. Net zero by 2030 should be our goal- NOT net 50%. Walmart is kicking our ass here.https://twitter.com/bradplumer/status/1123272627806789637?s=21 …Emily Cunningham added,

4) @IPCC_CH notes the world needs to reduce emissions by 45% by 2030 for a 60% chance — 60% chance! — of keeping global temp below 1.5C. Considering what’s at stake, these are terrible odds. So, for all the reasons listed above, Shipment Zero falls far, far short.

A bit of clarification for # 3: net zero by 2030 should be our goal for the *entire company* — not just for shipping.
