      Eric Holthaus Retweeted Xavier Fettweis

This week, 40 billion tons of ice will melt in Greenland as the European heat wave moves north -- enough to measurably raise global sea levels. This single heat wave will create a permanent change in our oceans that will linger for millennia. We are in a climate emergency.https://twitter.com/xavierfettweis/status/1155765949850673152 …

      Eric Holthaus added,

      Xavier Fettweis @xavierfettweis
A heat wave is starting tomorrow over Greenland with Tmax reaching 25°C in tundra. The integrated anomaly of melt over the next 5 days (resp. over Summer 2019) will be 40Gt ~0.11mm (resp. ~0.65mm) sea level equivalent. Summer 2019 = what the models project for 2050 using RCP85. pic.twitter.com/nrryUhpCmk

That goes to show how accurate the models are. Total bunk

That shows how feedback loops work. We were warned that climate change would not be linear; once it began in earnest changes could be unpredictable (e.g. ice that used to reflect sunlight melts and now absorbs sunlight, feeding the system.) #climatechangeisreal

Can someone please explain what RCP85 is? I'm not a climate scientist and want to get this out there in a way other non-scientists can easily understand. Thank you! (Also, I did a quick Google search, but still unclear what RCP85 is.)

Found the answer. Read both tweets:https://twitter.com/hausfath/status/1155961891778228225 …

These sorts of comments can be a bit misleading. This summer will be an average summer in 2050 in RCP8.5; an extreme summer in 2050 would be much hotter. There isn't necessarily evidence that temps are warming faster than models predicted in the Arctic: https://www.carbonbrief.org/factcheck-is-three-five-celsius-of-arctic-warming-now-locked-in … https://twitter.com/dwallacewells/status/1155952558772350976 …
