it strikes me that the real difference between progressives and moderates is that moderates constantly focus on the averages – the "average" voter, the "average" American, the middle class – and excuse suffering as acceptable as long as that average is fine.

I'm very suspect of how many people feel similarly to these "moderate" commentators. As @rtraister so brilliantly lays out... they are wholly out of step, unable to see the shift toward progressive ideas and policies in front of their faces.
