The climate crisis should be the front page, top stories of every media we watch, read, listen to. Every story needs to be seen through a climate lens to help people connect dots, grapple with what’s at stake, and understand the scale and urgency that’s required.https://twitter.com/GhostPanther/status/1141226371085004801 …

Every day I’m stunned by the media’s silence or total lack of urgency in reporting the destruction of our livable atmosphere. It’s really jaw dropping. And completely unconscionable. https://twitter.com/billmckibben/status/1141124920132415489 …

Journalists covering the climate crisis have one of THE most important jobs. Hats off to them. Media *institutions* fail us by not covering the climate emergency like the existential threat it is. Think media during WWII. Do we see anything like that? No.https://twitter.com/WolfeReports/status/1141568173046673414 …

Part of my job is covering the environment. I regularly report on climate change and environmental degradation. So do literally dozens of reporters at dozens of outlets in the U.S., coast to coast. We're. Not. Effing. Silent. And look, this is QTing a story by the BBC. https://twitter.com/GhostPanther/status/1141226371085004801 …

I read papers from WWII every week. I've done so since November 2016. The problem with WWII reporting is it gets real hard to see the big picture real quick. Battles in half a dozen places around the world no one's heard of. Plant strikes. Price controls. It all becomes noise.

Genuine question: What do you think needs to happen so that the public has a true sense of the existential threat we're facing? The urgency? What it would actually take to turn this around and avoid the worst of what's coming?

The entertainment industry, which has a greater share of public’s attention than journalism (sad but true), has the most potential to change public mindset. When *every* movie, streaming series, and celebrity is talking about the climate crisis, we’ll see mass mobilization.

Really, maybe it's not that we need to create new content about climate change, but maybe that the TV shows and movies already out there need to become more realistic about the world we live in. Cause, seriously, how is it not in every storyline already?

It seems like we need to do a lot of reimagining. I like @AlexSteffen's thinking in this piece, "It’s time for a whole new approach to climate journalism" https://thenearlynow.com/i-told-the-new-york-times-its-time-for-a-whole-new-approach-to-climate-journalism-450f41fd2ff5 … @EricHolthaus and @SydneyAzari also working on this:https://twitter.com/EricHolthaus/status/1123392668644597761 …

Along with @sydneyazari, I’ve created an outline for a media organization inspired by @AOC’s recent video -- the primary goal is to imagine a better world that works for everyone, tell stories from that world and from today, and help usher it into being. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1tz_qVwJeGhjoTvzfX0i9Bq8DXZMEmVrrasEINQ-EURg/edit …

The key element in the search for answers is getting people to realise that they'll find neither 1) a true reflection of scientific reality, nor 2) common sense, non-market, emergency solutions in state-corporate media. The Herman/Chomsky propaganda model reveals the problem.

Well, in addition to doing a lot of "reimagining," part of it *must* be a critique of media institutions current failure on reporting on the climate crisis. Respectfully, that's what @GhostPanther was doing and what you balked at. Much media *is* silent and lacks urgency.

By the time the public has a true sense of the existential threat of #climatechange, in all likelihood, it'll be too late. The urgency is incomprehensible to most people. Real mitigation requires is a World War II level of mobilization by every government and major corporation.
