Thinking about this makes me so angry and sad.
The speech I gave to Bezos about @AMZNforClimate's climate shareholder resolution got a lot of press.
Though I started my speech about the utter devastation cyclone Idai caused in southern Africa, none of the press reported that.

To be clear: other parts of my speech were quoted, but not this: "The people killed by cyclone Idai have contributed almost nothing to the climate breakdown which has made storms like this so common and deadly — but Amazon has and continues to."

Cyclone Idai destroyed 90% of Beira, Mozambique, a city the size of Sacramento and Tucson. Thousands killed and missing. "The U.N. called it the worst weather-related disaster in recorded history in the Southern Hemisphere." Yet, it barely made a blip in the news.

"The people most affected by climate change are those who have done the least to create the problem. Cyclone Idai lays bare the injustice of climate change." ~
@EricHolthaus I tried to use my privilege to make us LOOK at the injustice, the racism. But again this was ignored.1 reply 0 retweets 2 likesShow this thread -

Imagine if I'd mentioned Norte Dame in my speech. Imagine the press that would have gotten. But instead I talked about the lives of Black people killed in Africa. And again, their lives didn't register as important enough to be reported on.https://twitter.com/SimpsonPike/status/1118295270469488640 …
Emily Cunningham added,
Anthony We Need a Green New Deal Simpson-Pike @SimpsonPikeOver half a billion Euros has been raised for Notre Dame already. There are still families who do not have a home after Grenfell. Flint still doesn't have clean water. Whole nations are being submerged because of climate change. POC's lives should matter more than cathedrals.Show this thread1 reply 0 retweets 0 likesShow this thread -
And you know what else is horrifying? *I* didn't notice that the climate justice part of my speech wasn't being reported on. My privilege, my racism kept me from seeing the lack of coverage about cyclone Idai in my speech to Bezos. It finally dawned on me *days* later.

White people in the climate movement-- we need to speak out over and over again: the climate crisis is an issue of racism that disproportionately kills and harms BIPOC. As the climate crisis accelerates this will only get exponentially worse. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/sep/14/africa-us-haiti-climate-change-black-lives-matter …pic.twitter.com/JriZ7fxSep
