.@EmilyStewartM and @AlexiaCampbell got a lot right in this @voxdotcom piece. Except for this: "Amazon is already doing a lot to reduce its carbon footprint." Given Amazon's MASSIVE carbon footprint, let's unpack what "a lot" means or doesn't mean.

"Our sustainability goals lack context. For example, we’ve set a goal of at least 50 solar installations in warehouse facilities by 2020. This represents only 6% of buildings in our global fulfillment network and a fraction of our overall carbon footprint." 4/

Amazon's plans for solar panels don't seem so impressive with more context, am I right? Are they "a lot" given Amazon's carbon emissions? Are they "a lot" if the US has to hit net zero emissions by 2030 for the world to stay within 1.5 ºC warming? https://twitter.com/bradplumer/status/1123272627806789637 … 5/

In fact, Bezos dodged an employee question today asking if he'd "commit to S-Team level goals to decarbonize at the speed consistent with the latest climate science" touting -- you guessed it -- our solar panels:

Back to the Vox piece. As evidence Amazon is "doing a lot" they say, "The company has invested in wind power and solar power," and links to a 2017
@drvox. Dave gets into solar and wind projects. Hopefully we can see now that the solar panels aren't "a lot." What about wind? 7/Show this thread -
On wind,
@bcmerchant's reporting flies in the face of Amazon's PR stunt of Bezos breaking a "champagne bottle atop a massive turbine to christen an Amazon wind farm in Texas in 2017" 8/https://gizmodo.com/amazon-is-aggressively-pursuing-big-oil-as-it-stalls-ou-1833875828 …Show this thread -
Amazon "quietly abandoned plans for one of its last scheduled wind farms last year." Meanwhile, it was busy wooing oil and gas business. 9/https://gizmodo.com/amazon-is-aggressively-pursuing-big-oil-as-it-stalls-ou-1833875828 …

From 2014-2016 Amazon "made admirable strides toward achieving its goal, bankrolling large solar plants and wind farms. Then, it stopped. Amazon hasn’t announced any new deals to supply clean energy to its data centers since 2016." (Tho the day the story published, it had.) 10

Hmmm...seems like interesting timing that new wind projects would be announced after employees started pressuring the company. But I digress. 11/

I encourage everyone to read
@bcmerchant's whole article. His reporting makes clear Amazon has not been doing "a lot" on wind or solar. https://gizmodo.com/amazon-is-aggressively-pursuing-big-oil-as-it-stalls-ou-1833875828 … /finShow this thread
