I was off twitter for most of the weekend and I guess I missed the conflagration over Rep. Omar. It seems like if you criticize aipac or Israel you’re automatically anti-Semitic—especially if you wear a hijab? Is that the gist? Yikes.

Legitimate criticism of Israel is not the issue here. Rep Omar is rightfully being called out for using antisemetic tropes about Jewish money and the "powerful Jewish lobby" controlling our government.https://twitter.com/Wonko_the_sane_/status/1094982900049678336 …

I caught up on the news of representative @IlhanMN and... wow. A sitting Member of Congress is accusing American Jews of engaging in a shadowy conspiracy to control U.S. Foreign Policy. A thread with some historical context and what her comments mean for American Jews. 1/ https://twitter.com/IlhanMN/status/1094761790595088384 …

🙄...is not AIPAC a powerful Israel lobby with a gigantic amount of influence over US policy toward Israel?

It’s fine to criticize AIPAC, but in context, and with acknowledgment that antisemetic tropes around Jewish control (of banks, of media, of government) has been used to devastating effects.

AIPAC IS a powerful Lobby influencing us though. It influenced us right into this unconstitutional BDS bill. And it influences us to send bails of money to Israel. So because of the tropes about Jews and money we can never criticize Israel/AIPAC the same we do other lobbies?

No, but criticisms have to be expressed in a manner that doesn't appear to be shading into classic antisemitism.

Many countries have groups within the US that attempt to influence relations between that country and the US. Those funds, like AIPAC, come from US citizens. Singling out American Jews for trying to legally influence govt policy the same way other groups do, is kinda antisemitic.

Vague intimations of shadowy cabals is an anti-semitic trope, but Omar was discussing a well-known, public lobbying organization. We need to be able to discuss the existence AIPAC. I realize someone could invoke the Elders of Zion in doing so, but she didn't.

But, isn't the big complaint about ALL Lobbyists, is that they make donations to politicians and have outsized influence?

“Money influencing politics” is not a particularly Jewish trope. For example, Jews were not the focus of All the Presidents Men (“follow the money”) or The Godfather II. Also, no Jews implicated in Saudi, Russian, or Koch efforts to influence the Trump Admin with (gasp!) $$$.

The fact that a person in a hijab can’t say AIPAC uses $$ to influence politics w/o being called anti-Semitic says more about her accusers than it does about her. The @gop reaction to @IlhanMN w/i days of POTUS calling Warren “Pocohantas” & in light of @SteveKingIA is revealing.
