Amazon doesn't have a plan for addressing the disruptions posed by climate change, and how it is reducing its company-wide dependence on fossil fuels. I'm hoping the shareholder resolution will help change that. 9/x

In the NYT article, a rep from Amazon said they "have set a goal to power our global infrastructure with 100 percent renewable energy." When? How? I can't fathom an Amazon employee walking into a meeting without a launch date and milestones for their business plans. 10/x

From a purely cynical, self-interested standpoint, Amazon would benefit from a climate plan: "There could be $23 trillion of global economic losses a year in the long term without rapid action." 11/xhttps://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/dec/10/tackle-climate-or-face-financial-crash-say-worlds-biggest-investors …

From the U.S. Climate Report: “[I]f significant steps are not taken to rein in global warming, the damage will knock as much as 10 percent off the size of the American economy by century’s end.” 12/xhttps://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/23/climate/us-climate-report.html …

“The report puts the most precise price tags to date on the cost to the UX economy of projected climate impacts: $141 billion from heat-related deaths, $118 billion from sea level rise and $32 billion from infrastructure damage by the end of the century, among others." 13/x

Another report: "Companies are vastly underestimating how badly they’ll be hurt by climate change"14/xhttps://www.fastcompany.com/90279746/companies-are-vastly-underestimating-how-badly-theyll-be-hurt-by-climate-change …

“The new normal of climate change–from increases in flooding & hurricanes to intense wildfires–is already costing companies $$. But a new study suggests they’re underestimating future climate risk to their biz, & vastly underreporting the financial implications to investors.”15/x

The writing is on the wall: the old, fossil-fuel economy is dying. Even the oil industry knows this. It's just a matter of time. And time is crucial. Companies that jump on and drive the new economy will be the ones with the competitive advantage. 16/x

Because Amazon operates at such massive scale, and has a culture of tackling tough problems, imagine the possibilities if it decided to take bold leadership on climate change. And we need bold leadership. Everywhere. Now. 17/17

From a fellow Amazonian, thanks for this push. I’ve been thinking along similar lines. Can’t wait to see where it goes.https://twitter.com/_loveallthis/status/1050286210088726528?s=21 …

Sarah Emerson @_loveallthisI’m fantasizing about someone / some company making large-scale emissions reduction & renewable energy production not just economically and politically viable, but a shareholder/constituent mandate. I just haven’t figured out how they’d do it. https://twitter.com/grossdm/status/1049993948742201344 …Show this thread1 reply 0 retweets 1 like
