I protested The Passion of the Christ back in 2004. I was so alarmed by such a public, unexamined display of antisemitism that I knew I had to do something. All I could think to do was to go, by myself, and hand out flyers I'd written explaining why it was antisemetic 1/2
in front of movie theaters on Ash Wednesday (opening night) and that weekend. I'm glad I did this, but I acted alone. What I'm realizing now is that I'll be much more effective joining up with other non-Jews to act *together.* 2/2
I'm actually v sad & scared. But I care A LOT. I debated mentioning The Passion protest bc I didn't want to sound performative. But I also know Jews internalize (understandably) that non-Jews don't care & you are alone to battle alone.That's not true, but allies need to do better
