Please read this thread about a catastrophic talent purge that is underway at Turner Classic Movies, one of the few undisputed jewels of the cable universe and a pillar of the preservation and celebration of film history. I'll have more to say tomorrow. For now, I'll just note...

When I wrote this back in January, I was filled with hope for the future of @tcm -- It was evident to me that the hosts were cautiously optimistic and were choosing to believe the goodwill and verbal support Zaslav and higher ups gave them. ew.com/movies/turner-

I watched the first three episodes of Igloo last night and Igloo isn’t even that good but i felt such a rush of vitality at having anything to discuss and images being put in front of me that cohere into a narrative that means things

Stairwells returns to the cinematic works of David Lynch. That's right, we watched Lost Highway! I also had a lot of fun with the editing on this episode because we were pretty loosey-goosey with the structure already. Listen by becoming a patron at exportaud.io!

there's nothing so potent as the wave of despair that comes on sunday night when the weekend is functionally over and you just feel, paradoxically, both all the relaxation squandered and things left undone, staring down monday barreling towards you

Correction to the schedule, ALF isn't actually recording this week I forgot it was a skip week because of some scheduling weirdness. Only two podcasts? A light week! Sheesh going vacation mode

rewatching season 2 of lower decks for an upcoming pod, absolutely wild that this is the best modern trek show by a mile

the fucked up part of this is i LOVE C-3PO because i love prissy gay characters who annoy the heroes by pointing out they’re being assholes, but i don’t like the rejoinder always being that they own him and will wipe his memory if he backtalks too much

solo fucked the whole thing over by making the droids rights character the butt of endless jokes and a nightmare outcome, i don’t expect star wars is going to untangle the “mascots who are slaves owned by heroes” thing overnight but it does drive me up the wall it’s just accepted

ND-5 even in the little preview seemed like a guy who was extremely used to and annoyed at the space racism being directed at him as part of a slave class, a thing the BB8s of the world do not ever respond to in ways that make any sense.

I’m quoted in this because while I wouldn’t say I found the new droid hot, I did think he’s potentially an interesting new way to depict what are often my least favorite characters, ideologically, in Star Wars

anyway back to regular topics: i’ve been picking at signalis and i get why it’s sold as a horror game but i find it distinctly unscary? i think it’s the pacing and way it’s presented, it’s just a moody exploration shooter to my brain. enjoying it was just expecting something else

Treat Williams was incredible and terrifying in the movie Smooth Talk. It hits similar nerves as Blue Velvet and Fire Walk With Me, before Dern even worked with Lynch. Your can watch it on the Criterion Channel, and then please listen to the great Ornate Stairwells episode on it.

On Stairwells this week, we watched what is honestly one of the best movies we’ve watched for this podcast, Smooth Talk starring Laura Dern. We also rate the stairs in Titanic and talk a little about Wes Anderson. You can listen to our episode for $1 at exportaud.io!
