"We have to minimize the health risk to people on the street and volunteers, and this is how we do it." - @RepJerryNadler
.@DickGottfried and @Bobby4Brooklyn have also joined the call.
"The petitioning process by its very nature puts people in contact with large numbers of other people....I urge the Governor to act very quickly." - @Bobby4Brooklyn
.@Bobby4Brooklyn adding that candidates should not take advantage of the public health crisis by trying to knock competitors off the ballot by challenging their petitions, a common practice in previous election cycles.
NOTE: the zoom conference line is at its max, so you likely won't be able to join. We'll continue live tweeting.
These are the minimum number of valid petition signatures needed for each office. But primary challengers often need to collect *many times more* than the minimum to avoid legal challenges by incumbents. This is a lot of social interaction.pic.twitter.com/WFIwd9Wy9b
Richard Semegram, VP of policy for @newkingsdems: "We really value petitioning as a community engagement opportunity so it's sad to be at this point."
Also calls on campaigns to deescalate, and in the name of public health, commit not to challenge each others ballot petitions.
Jasi Robinson from Staten Island: "Especially new candidates have a lot of obstacles and challenges when they're entering the political arena... During this pandemic, it's going to make the challenges even harder." Echoes calls to commit not to challenge petitions.
.@AravellaSimotas: "This crisis is effecting every corner of our lives. We need to take responsible measures to make sure we're limiting the spread of this disease."
Says changes to the petition requirements are a "wise precaution."
We didn't catch who the last person speaking was but she made a very simple and important point: getting someone to sign a petition requires two strangers to be within six feet of each other. "Other means should be devised to preserve our democratic means of representation."
Michael @BeltzerNYC in the Bronx: "Our communities are some of the most vulnerable under capitalism... The government saying we should put our neighbors at risk" to get on the ballot is "unconscionable."
The idea of vote-from-home ballots is being discussed. It's 2020: we can figure out how to do this safely and securely!
Call is ending. Full video recording will be available soon. Thanks for following along.
