The example in my tweet is just taking a desaturated hair texture and then combining the RGB value as a MIX operation. I think that works well for a PoC, but there's always room for improvement.
I don't know if ramps are a possibility in WoW? Or how their shaders work. But a BW texture as a map and a gradient/ramp as the colors would definitely preserve all the nuances of the textures. Some have a lot of nuances. Especially the warm ones. Multiply mix erases that

I'm not aware of any reason why they couldn't do that. I believe the only limitation is their interest (or lack therefore) in the idea.

The issue is it's not possible in the engine. They don't have things like color shaders, so every variation of something has to have a unique texture for it. WoW uses a patchwork wc3 engine so they have a shit ton of core limitations.
