Additional advantage: There are currently 6925 files in the game related to hair/eyes, because each colour is a separate texture. Dynamic colouring? One grayscale texture per visual variant, colour applied via shader. That's less files and less VRAM usage.

I'd be totally for it if they use gradients (so at least two colors) to set up the colors, like for gradient maps/ramps, and not the very ugly "multiply" option many use. That would just erase nuances. Nope. Also, of course masks for the races with normal eyes.

The example in my tweet is just taking a desaturated hair texture and then combining the RGB value as a MIX operation. I think that works well for a PoC, but there's always room for improvement.

100% agree on the eye mask. Races with glowing eyes now have a mask built-in to the bottom of eye textures for glow-control. For pupiled races, this exact thing could be re-used for masking the colour.
