Trump says Jim Webb won't be Pentagon chief, and the admin says he could keep Pat Shanahan as acting SECDEF indefinitely. Is that legal? The answer appears to be yes... but with caveats. and I here, with help from & .

For more than 2 years, I hoped that a member of the president's party would rebuke his use of smutty language to launch unpresidential attacks. It rarely happened.

In this new Congress we must do what is right and not what is easy. So I'll say what needs to be said: My colleague was flat-out wrong.

Seems POTUS has broad authority under the National Emergencies Act to undertake military construction projects if a national emergency is declared. So the question is not whether he is in possession of this power but rather whether it ought to be used this way.

House Democrats say if Trump tries to go around Congress to build the Wall this will go to court. Constitution gives Congress power of purse and 1976 national emergencies act very limited

Hopefully discussions over the weekend lead to a breakthrough that: 1 Reopens the government. 2 Provides funding for border security/wall. 3 Provides certainty to hundreds of thousands of people who will be losing their legal status and thrown into the shadows unless we act.

Trump just said federal workers’ safety net is a secure border. No word how they should pay their bills in the meantime.
